This shawl was born from thinking of the curves of a seashell – stacks of triangles turning into graceful curves.It’s knit from the top down, adding increase pairs along the way to achieve a shape that hugs your shoulders and wraps around for easy closure with a shawl pin.
The main body of the shawl is knit in simple stockinette to highlight the color and texture of your yarn, and to emphasize the geometry of the design (it’s also easy to knit, and makes for great meeting/travel knitting). A touch of lace at the hem and a decorative bind off adds interest and turns this simple project into something special.
I knit my version in a delicately shaded hand dyed yarn, but the design works equally well with more assertive color changes, or with stripes. Tech specs:
Level: Intermediate
Yarns: I used Knit Picks Bare Laceweight (880 yards/100g, used 77g, or about 700 yds), hand dyed with Logwood Purple. Test knitters used Knit Picks Bare (hand dyed), Beehive Scotch Fingering (150 yds/28 g, exact yardage used unknown) and Findley Dappled Laceweight by Juniper Moon (798 yds/100g, used 68 g of a 100g skein, or about 550 yds)
Gauge: 4â€x 4†= 32 stitches and 37 rows (flexible, see pattern notes on customization)
Needle: I used a US size 1 (2mm) needle. Test knitters used between a size 1 and a size 3 to achieve gauge.
Finished size: 17″ along back center line, 30″ from tip to tip.
